Key Takeaways from Shreyas Iyer’s IPL Captaincy Record

In 2018, a young Shreyas Iyer was handed the captaincy of Delhi mid-season. With Ricky Ponting as mentor, he transformed the side, guiding them to the playoffs in three consecutive years (2019, 2020, and 2021). This run also included a finals appearance in 2020. Due to injury, he missed a large part of IPL 2021 and subsequently stepped down as the skipper after returning for the remainder of the season.

Shreyas Iyer is the 5th youngest to lead a team in the IPL. Check the full list here.

In 2022, he was bought by the Kolkata Knight Riders and was immediately made their skipper. Under his leadership, KKR went on to win their third IPL title in 2024.

The 2025 move to Punjab Kings reunited him with Ricky Ponting, the coach who shaped his early captaincy journey.

With a captaincy performance of 55% wins, Shreyas has done a pretty good job as an IPL captain. This puts him in a solid spot among league leaders.

Teamwise, he has a better win percentage while captaining the Punjab Kings. However, it’s still early and we’ll have to wait and see.

His numbers with the bat have also improved in 2025 after ing the Punjab side. Find his year-wise IPL batting stats here.
