Key Insights – When Openers and No.3 All Score Hundreds in a Test Innings
The first instance of the top three batters scoring centuries in the same Test innings dates back to 1924. The trio of Jack Hobbs (211), Herbert Sutcliffe (122), and Frank Woolley (134) brought up their individual hundreds against South Africa at Lord’s.
Three of the 17 instances took place at the Lord’s, the most at any venue. Apart from that, Trent Bridge is the other venue from England to record this unique feat once.
The 2025 Trent Bridge Test was a historical affair. England’s Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, and Ollie Pope became the first top three batters to achieve this feat twice. The trio had scored a century each against Pakistan in the 2022 Rawalpindi Test before repeating it against Zimbabwe in 2025.
Thanks to their efforts, England put up 506 runs at the end of the first day in Rawalpindi, the most by a team. And the first day at Trent Bridge saw England score 498 runs, trailing their 506.
Rahul Dravid and Hashim Amla are the other batters involved in two instances each, though with different partners.
Bill Lawry and Bob Simpson are one of the two opening pairs who scored double hundreds in the same Test innings. The duo achieved the record against the West Indies in 1965. Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie are the other pair, though their double tons came against Bangladesh in 2008.
Three Tests – Mirpur 2007, Karachi 2019, and Galle 2023 – saw all top four batters of a team smash hundreds of their own. Sachin Tendulkar (122*), Babar Azam (100*), and Angelo Mathews (100*), respectively, were the other No. 4 centurions.
